Advertising, as on commercial television, is now a mainstay of the Internet. It’s what helps to pay for many of the products and services that we have come to count on. But, it doesn’t mean that we have to put up with the insistent attempts by some sites or service providers to take over our desktops. Depending upon your ISP (Internet Service Provider), the pop-up ads could actually be coming from your provider. AOL users have had to deal with this from the beginning, even if all they wanted to do was check for e-mail messages. Fortunately, AOL listened to their users and gave them an option for turning off the AOL pop-up ads. To disable them, click on the My AOL button on the toolbar at the top, then on Preferences. Click on the Marketing button and remove the checkmark in front of the Pop-up box.

For the rest of us, these annoying pop-up windows will occur when we visit websites that are hosted by free communities such as Tripod, Xoom, Geocities or heaven forbid, if you venture onto an adult site. These sites take advantage of scripting tools that will open new browser windows when you enter or, in the case of the adult sites, try to close the window.

Well, one of the great things about the Internet is that the Super Geeks that suffer the same annoyances as us common mortals will create programs to overcome them and offer them for FREE! One of the more infamous Super Geeks is Mark Thompson, a.k.a. AnalogX, and he has created a free program called POW! POW! allows you to permanently block pop-up windows from known communities as well as add any new ones that you run across. According to Mark, “After a late night of closing those damn windows, I couldn't take it any more, and AnalogX POW! was born!”

POW! is a tiny program that loads in your system tray (bottom right corner, next to the clock in Windows based systems) and is very simple to use and best of all it’s FREE! You can download a copy from http://www.datadoctors.com/pow.htm.

AnalogX, the self-proclaimed “World's largest freeware developer”, has dozens of very useful programs that he has written and offers them to anyone that wants them at http://www.AnalogX.com.
