Tip of the Week: Find & Replace in Word, quickly

One of the most useful tools in Microsoft Word is the Find & Replace feature, which makes modifying existing documents or updating names or locations a breeze.  To launch the interface, press Ctrl-H, then simply tell Word which word(s) you want it to find in the Find what: box and type the text you want to replace it with in the Replace with: box.

If you want to make sure that your selection was correct, you can click on the Replace button and each instance will come up one at a time.  If you are confident in your instructions, you can click on Replace All and viola!

Headwhack of the Week: If you love Gmail, just say NO to IE 8!

The latest version of Microsoft's browser, Internet Explorer 8, has some very interesting new features as we discussed in last week's advice column...

However, it seems that the 'new way' of viewing the Internet through the IE 8 lens isn't working too well with some very popular websites, such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail.  Our advice for avid Gmail and Yahoo Mail users is to not authorize the update until Microsoft or the web sites figure out how to play nice together.

If your copy of Windows is setup to automatically update, Microsoft will start the download process starting next week, but the good news is that IE 8 won't get installed without your permission, so if you love Gmail or Yahoo Mail, just say NO! (or use our preferred browser, Firefox!)

Geek Speak of the Week: Designated Texter

A passenger who reads and replies to text messages received on the driver's phone, allowing the driver to focus on driving safely.

Security:  Teen Twitter worm writer gets a job!

The teenager who takes credit for the worms that hit Twitter earlier this week has been hired by a Web application development firm and on Friday released a fifth attack on the microblogging site... Michael Mooney, a 17-year-old living in Brooklyn, N.Y., told CNET News that he wrote the worms because he was bored and wanted to bring Twitter's attention to the security holes.

News: Netflix Subscribers See Red Over Cracked Blu-ray Discs

Netflix Blu-ray disc subscribers may want to inspect their red envelopes a little more closely before popping the discs into a player.

Hundreds of subscribers to the company's movies-by-mail service
say they have received fractured Blu-ray discs that won't play -- and that it's happening at an alarming rate.

News: Save Paper Costs by Shrinking Prints

Want to cut up to half your paper and ink budget? Just use half as much paper. Yeah, it sounds like the punchline to a sad joke--I won't quit my day job--but this simple tip can work.

Weekly Advice Column: Dealing with Internet 'trolls'

The popularity of social media has generated a lot of first time users of blogs, social networking and community forum sites and many 'newbies' are thrown off my some of the participants of these systems.

Internet trolls are the online equivalent of hoodlums and thugs, but the good news is that no one has to get hurt dealing with these boneheads!

This Week's Show: Recycling E-Waste on Earth Day

When Earth Day was first proclaimed in 1970, no one had any idea what "e-waste" was, much less what to do with it.

As we evolved into a nation of consumers with a veracious appetite for technology, the problem of what to do with our old tech began to have an impact.

Today, e-waste is said to be growing at a rate 3X the rate of general municipal waste so the problem is just going to get worse.

The most disturbing statistic is the paltry percentage (less than 5%) of e-waste that is being recovered.

Listen in as the Data Doctors give you tips, encouragement and resources to join the move to properly dispose of e-waste in honor of Earth Day!
