Tip of the Week: Searching with 'additude'

By now you've likely heard us talking about Twitter as a search engine that can deliver much more current results than Google, even if you don't have a Twitter account.

It's especially helpful if you are researching a product or service because you can see what a large number of people have just recently had to say about your item of interest.

But this week's tip shows you how to search for positive or negative comments for your search subject.  For instance, if you wanted to see what folks were saying about the iPhone 3Gs but wanted to see either the positive or negative comments, go to http://search.twitter.com and type:

iPhone 3Gs :) = positive additude postings

iPhone 3Gs :( = negative additude postings

Headwhack of the Week: Steering clear of money scams

Nothing would cause you to whack your head harder than being scammed out of money and lots of mooyucks (that's one we made up!) on the Internet are trying to take advantage of those seeking some form of income.

Often times, the scams will try make it look like you are working with or for Google Adwords, but lots of clever scams are popping up every day.

The folks at Google put together a nice resource to help you identify potential scams and other schemes as well as what to do when you run across them or worse, if you fell for one of these scams!

Geek Speak of the Week: HIPS

Host Intrusion Prevention Systems - A supplemental security technology used in security systems and software (like antivirus) to stop unknown threats. This additional level of security can be why many of today's security packages cause older computers to bog down; the additional processes are too much for slower processing systems.

Security: Safer Surfing - Controlling Scripts in Firefox

Scripts allow web browsers to create elaborate experiences on the Internet but they can also be the gateway for hackers to gain control of your computer.  Many security experts recommend turning scripting off totally, but that means you lose the functionality at your trusted web sites.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could turn scripts on and off, depending upon which sites you trusted and those that you weren't sure about?

Well, we have some good news for FireFox users - you can, by simply installing a free add-on called NoScript

Note: IE8 includes Cross Site Scripting (XSS) Filtering, which is turned on by default, but not nearly as functional and flexible as NoScript!

News: Wireless Cybercriminals target clueless vacationers

Vacationers and Travelers BEWAREThe newest trend in Internet fraud is "vacation hacking," a sinister sort of tourist trap.  Cybercriminals are targeting travelers by creating phony Wi-Fi hot spots in airports, in hotels, and even aboard airliners.

News: Apple plugs dangerous Safari security holes

Apple has released Safari 4.0.2 to fix a pair of security flaws that could lead to cross-site scripting or remote code execution attacks.

The vulnerabilities affect Safari for Windows (XP and Vista) and Mac OS X.

Opinion:  FacebookWindows 7: Is the Price Right?

Dan Costa of PCMAG.com says "After weeks of using Windows 7 as my primary OS, I can tell you it works great. But is it priced to sell?"

This Week's Show: Deciphering Anti-malware software options

If you're computer is connected to the Internet, you MUST have the proper protection software in place or be exposed to countless security exploits.

But with so many choices to evaluate, how do you know what the best programs are for you?  Should you install free software, pay for the software or some combination of the two?

The variables for making the right choice include the type and age of your computer, the age and activities of the users, the number of users and past issues.

Listen in as the Data Doctors review all the current options, variables and threats that you need to know about in order to choose the right protection.
