Can a person steal information from my laptop via wifi?

If I am using a public wifi at abookstore, can another person there steal information from my latop while I am on the internet?

Yes a person can get information from your laptop.

To turn off access to your PC via WIFI, please do the following:

1) Menu "Start" -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.

2) Right-click on your WIFI connection icon and select Properties.

3) Uncheck box near "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks".

4) After that click ok
