Missing floppy drive icon

Question

Came to use a floppy disk this afternoon and found that the icon does not exist in my computer. I also tried to access it direct through Word but no luck, its just not there. When I attempt to enter A:\ manually it says "Cannot find 'file:///A:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". I'm not sure how long I've had this problem as its a long time since ive need to use a floppy disk.

I've checked in device manager and its all recognised and apparently working fine. I'd be grateful if anyone has any ideas of what the problem could be?

I'm using XP Home.

Thanks,

Jon Hart

This question was answered on December 7, 2004. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

try this:

place a disk in your floppy drive (I'm assuming A:\)

click on 'start' then 'run' and type in "CMD" and press enter

//this will open your command prompt

type "A:" and press enter

//it should show that you are accessing the drive with the cursor blinking after A:type "dir" and press enter

if the drive is connected and working properly, you should see the files on the disk
