Can I use one computer and display 2 desktops?

Question

We have several computers that are attached to an LCD projector with a splitter so that the monitor and projector display the same image. Is there a way to set the display properties so that the monitor could show a different screen from what the projector is displaying? As an example...a DVD is being shown from the player in the computer on the projector and the teacher can work on e-mail, grades, etc. on the computer without interferring with the DVD?

In order to do what you are wanting to do you would require 2 different computers. How a Y cable ( splitter ) works is it merely sends the data to 2 different visual devices rather then one. This means that whatever one shows the other will have to be showing as well.
