How can I restore event sounds in Windows XP?

This question was answered on May 6, 2006. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

Simply go to your control pannel and select sounds and audio devices. Next go to the "Sounds" tab on the window that pops up. From the dropdown menu select the "Windows Default" option and then customize to your liking from there in the "Program Events" area of the window.
