Can I use a generic floppy drive in my laptop?

Can I use a generic 3.5in desktop floppy drive to

replace the floppy drive om my AcerNote 760ic notebook

or must I use the Acer-supplied drive?

Laptop computers are all proprietary, which means you must go back to the original equipment manufacturer.
