High CPU usage?

Question

hello, the cpu usage goes from normally nothing to 100% when i view the contents of my hard drive. i have the hard drive and a dvd burner set for cable select and on the same cable. the cpu usage goes up even if its sitting idle with just the window open for the hard drive. the process that is taking up all the cpu is EXPLORER.EXE. i might also ad that the hard drive has a partition at 20gb and at 300gb. i would appreciate it if you could help with this problem.

thank you

dan

My best guess with the information you gave me is that you have a virus or a program running in the backgroud using all of your CPU usage. First try disconnecting your machine from the internet. See if that changes anything. If not then backup your important documents and try swapping a new Hard drive in. If you do not have a different hard drive try reformatting your old one once you backuped all your data.
