It's a safe bet to assume it's "wise" to wait until the first service pack is released. Vista was released on Jan 30, so it's been out for 5 months now.

Lifehacker, a popular computer blog, recommends this:

"If you want a truly seamless transition to Vista - especially if you're upgrading your existing PC versus buying a new one with it pre-installed - I'd say wait. Not the possible 11 months or so it will take for Service Pack 1 to come out, but maybe a month or two to let software and hardware vendors work out the kinks with their apps and drivers."

At this point it's up to you. If you need a new computer get one. There are places online, Dell.com for example, that will let you buy a new computer with XP still, so if you're unsure you can always go with the familiar.
