Question

How do I stop Internet Explorer from opening Excel files?

Answer

This question was answered on April 11, 2003. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

By default Microsoft Internet Explorer will open Microsoft Excel pages within the browser window. Some users may find this unnecessary or may not wish to open the file and instead save the file to the hard drive and later open it with Excel.

Solutions:

Open My Computer, Click on the drop down menu View and click on the option Folder Options click on the tab that File Types and choose in the Registered file types box the icon that says Microsoft Excel Worksheet. Check the box in the new window that says Confirm open after download. Click ok.
