we have gone to the gateway site to get the latest downloads for this machine which is a gateway essentais 566. it is her first computer and was bought second hand from a garage sale...we had lots of problems with it until we put in windows Xp. now on the gateway website it has updates for the motherboard and the monitor ( we are leaving the bios alone )...we sent a simple email to gateway and were given the response that now that the warranty has expired and that she owns it second hand, they cant assist us unless we use the pay per call forum...are only question is that om the updates the state compatible with win 95,98 and windows 98se.the motherborard staes it supports windows ME..but none list win Xp....are the updates compatible with xp? she is new to computers and this machine is a perfect starter for her. i dont want to download something that is going to cause a problem....

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME IN ADVANCE

Its strange that windows Xp is giving you problem because it really work well because windows has compatible drivers even with legacy or unknow manufacture devices What you can do is to go to this special website call http://www.driverguide.com/, this website has a huge database of all kinds of drivers, just type the any devices that can't be compatible with windows Xp and you may feel lucky to find one in this database.

Make sure you get the device name and manufacture.

AFter you found the drivers and install, windows XP will warn that this driver is not have digital sign, don't worry about the warning just accept to install because it might work.
