Check the Device Manager and check if you see yellow color with a exclemation point in the section of sound, video and game controllers if you do then you don't have the proper driver for the card or it doesn't has, Install the drivers for the sounds or you can look at the manufacture website of the sound driver and look for the latest drivers that will support for Windows XP.

Also you may don't have the physical devices install on your computer and that why gives you this messeage check on the back of your computer to see if you have the jack audio port.

If you cannot find any drivers that will be compatible with windows Xp, you can visit this special website http://www.driverguide.com/, this website has a huge database of any kinds of drivers for any operating system or any devices.
