What is the BIOS?

Dell Laptop 5000e running 850mhz with WinME..would like to wipe the 20mg drive and install Windows XP..what would be the best way to do this..have already bought Win XP (not upgrade CD)...thanks for any help....

What you need to do is when your laptop is loading up just when its says press F2 or F8 or del to enter setup do so so that you can have your cd drive load up first which will allow you to erase everything from install xp
