I upgraded from ME to Windows 2000. Went to the Microsoft website for updates, security patches, etc. Downloaded what I needed but after restarting computer everything loaded well until just after "applying personal settings". The computer does not hang but the screen is still blue, no icons, no bars, nothing. However, I can use taskmanager (control alt delete) and can use all software with no problem. Can you point me to how I can know what files need to be loaded at boot up?

When you press Control alt delete you then cllick on the processes and end prosses that you do not need, for example, the new software that your computer does not need to start with Just do not end (SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS, VBTRAY or SYSTRAY) Those processes are needed for you computer to start.
