What is the virtual memory?

Wondering why machine keeps hanging up. Trying to install windows xp, but computer hangs while copying files to the installation folder. Also hangs if I try to install large program or run a large application such as virus scan. Relatively new system. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated......

If you increase the size of the virtual memory this problem should not persist
