Tell me what is the program you are install to see what are the system requirement to match to your system if is will work You migth have an old software that might not be compatible to your Windows XP.

Check the software requirements and also what is the hardware requirement such as memory size you need, processor, etc.

If you can install any software like you say in the computer than you computer is fine, the problem is the software If your software support your system then the software has bug that is running properly, what you can do is to get the latest software from the manufacture website and also download the guideline so you can read the step that you need to take.
