My father has a 500ghtz HP desktop with 128mb RAM. It came with Windows 98SE but he always complained about how slow it was. I first upgraded the RAM from 64mb to 128mb (the max) and he was fine for a while.

Then he was plagued by spyware and viruses. I cleaned these up but he kept on complaining about the speed of the computer.

So I installed Windows ME and the problem got worse. I made sure that all of the Windows Updates were installed, that I installed the ME drivers from the HP site to no avail.

After using the machine for a short time things just slow down. By using I mean surfing the net, working with a spreadsheet program, etc.

I have done disk cleanup, looked for disk drive problems, checked and rechecked for viruses and spyware (using McAfee and Spybot), defragmented the hard drive, and uninstalled or removed non-essential programs from start-up.

I have run out of things to try short of reformatting his harddrive and reinstalling the operating system from scratch.

Any thoughts?

It seems your cpu is not responding well enough to run smoothly with your computer so what you need to do is replace that and you will be fine
