Error in the system files?

I'm trying to reinstall a operating system on a compaq. It came with xp home. It gets about half way through and starts having problems. It either cant write files or displays a message that says it has performed an illegal operation and will shut down to prevent dammage to the computer. I even tried to install 98 and 3 quarters the way through it said it found an error in the system files and has corrected it but still dosnt want to install. It then reports an error that says " A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:c00448EE IN VXD vcashe (01). Current application will be terminated. The only thing I could think of was a BAD hard drive. PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!!

I think you need to get a new hard drive.
