What is the max ram i can place in a system?

All I want to know is that I am building a computer and I want to know how much Ram I can put in it total?

The largest available memory stick is approx a gigabyte, depending on how your motherboard is built, you have between 2-4 slots, so the most one could have is between 2-4 gig of ram.

however, to run smoothly in 2000 or xp would be a min of 128 mb, or up to 256 for comfortable speed.
