What this is?

Question

I'm having problems with my DVD player on my Laptop. It was playing OK then all of a sudden as soon as I inserted a disk it would freeze the laptop and I would have to turn off the power and remove the battery just to get it to reset. This keeps happening. Eventually one DVD read the copyright notice but as soon as it got to the main menu it hung again. I use Cyberlink Power DVD. I have taken it off and re-installed it and I have done the same with my edition of ME. I even downloaded a free DVD player player from the Net but still no joy - it still freezes the computer. The system is swept and virus free and I'm pretty sure the DVD reader still works (from the one that partially boots but dies at the menu screen). My CD-ROM combo works fine and I can still burn CD's. Thanks in advance for any tips that you can give me!!! Would I be better formatting the whole system and starting again? The computer is only 11 months old.

Sometimes PowerDVD is set to begin playing DVD's right after they are inserted Go into PowerDVD's configuration menu and prevent it from doing this It is better to manually start your DVD Player Also, your DVD Drive lens may be dirty or the DVD disc itself It would not be a bad idea to invest in a CD lens cleaner disc.

Try this (may not work in Windows Me but it is worth a shot) Click Start, then RUN, type in dvdupgrd /detect, if it works, it will tell you whether or not you have the most up-to-date DVD codec (CODer DECoder) for your DVD playing software.

I don't think that it is necessary to format your computer and start everything from scratch, for this is a simple software conflict with third party software not with the original operating system

By the way, InterVideo's WinDVD is far superior to Cyberlink's PowerDVD.
