How can I defrag my PC?

i desperately need to defrag, however when i try to restart my computer in safe mode, it freezes before windows loads - leaving only a black screen. Any suggestions???

This question was answered on April 6, 2004. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.


Try to boot up your PC in Normal Mode first to see if the Windows OS will load.

If it does load then you should be able to defrag your hard drive.

If it does not load and goes to a black screen the way it does in Safe Mode, then your hard drive may be severely corrupted by too many bade sectors or by a virus Since you won't be able to load Windows to fix either one, your only option is buy another hard drive and reconfigure your PC.
