I get an error message at the start up screen saying Windows error. The computer then goes into safe mode and then hangs. I have only just replaced the hard drive. This suggests it could be another problem. Could it be that I need a new motherboard, because it is unlikely to be software error?

With the question you've asked, I can only suggest that you would need a new motherboard If you installed the hard drive yourself and was unaware about the dangers of static electricity to your motherboard, there is the possibility that you might have fried your board The slightest bit of static can screw up your motherboard Remember to always wear a anti-static wrist band I don't believe this problem can be a software related error but if it is you always have the option of restoring your pc to the original state with your computer restore cds that came along with your computer when you first purchased it.
