What is a modem?

I started getting error message when I couldn't connect to the internet "no dial tone". I went out bought a new US robotics modem, installed and started connecting again, that last for about 4 or 5 connection. I started not being able to connect and started getting the same error messages about no dial tone. New modem is a US Robotics 56k pci faxmodem for Windows,

part number R24.0343.00

1.make sure the phone cord from the wall outlet is plugged into the line jack on the modem

2 the modem might not be able to detect the dial tone, try unplugging any other equipment plugged into this same phone line, such as fax machine.

3 Straighten your phone lines dont let them get all twisted and crrosed up with other heavy electrical lines.
