Both of my cd drives (read-only and write drives) will not recognize disks inserted into them, yet I can play audio cd's in them.

Clicking on the drives in windows explorer does nothing. It asks me to insert a disk in the drive. The drive won't read any kind of disk (burned, manufactured or audio), but I can play audio disks using any media player (Musicmatch, winamp or windows media player).

What could be causing this?

Your CD drives are in the play only mode, need to check marked read and write also.
