Is it possible to own (host) your website on you very own household computer? I'm curious because I'm wondering how all these websites who offer hosting plans come about. It would seem like only the top companies like Time Warner or Aol and such could do it. Also, if it is possible, can I have my own name (www.mywebsite.com) instead of those sub names (www.myname.freesite.com).

Yes! you can on your own websites with your name, but you will have to pay the ISP to publish it on their web server
