Is starting and shutting down computer damaging to hardware?

Is it safe and alright to leave computer running or is it not safe? Also is starting and shuttingdown computer damaging to harddrive?

It is preferrable to turn off computer when not in use, starting and shutting down your computer can do no damage to your hard drive In fact you will save on electricity!
