Why am I unable to scan my computer, scandisk will not perform.

i am unable to scan my computer.when i go to start-programmes-accessories-system tools-scan disk .the computer does'nt perform scanning.it stops after two or three steps.what do i do?

You stated that it only gives you two or three steps but did not state whether you got an error message If you did, then you need to close all applications and programmes before running scandisk.
