I was told by a "computer consultant" today that if you use scan and defrag fairly regularly or you shut down your computer by hitting the power button, you will kill your hard drive. Is there any truth to this???? I'm worried because my computer has started freezing up on me and I can only reboot by shutting down the power - ctrl/alt/delete does not work, it is frozen too. No viruses, have scanned and defragged, not downloaded any new programs. Thanks so much for your help.

I don't think that's totally correct Scandisk and defragment helps keep the computer clean, like a car your computer needs routine maintenance This is one way of doing so If your computer is freezing, it could be any number of problems none of which I think is cause by scan or defrag You probably need more memory or just system error because of conflict.
