On most Microsoft OS's, to restore a desktop wallpaper you can click the right mouse button anywhere on the desktop, this will open a popup menu - select properties at the bottom of the list this will open a display properties window If you select the Desktop tab you will notice all the different wallpapers listed on the bottom half of the screen Select the wallpaper of choice and click on ok, if the wallpaper you want is not on the list then click on the browse button you will then need to search your computer for the location of the wallpaper fille tha you wish to use.
Restoring the shell on an OS is much more trick, your best bet may be to boot of the OS CD as if you were performing a new install, and have it repair all missing and corrupt files.
