I have dual boot, 98 and XP. booting from 98 my modem works ok. With Xp I get the mesage that there is a hardware fault and no dial tone. When I look at the modem properties in Xp it recognises the modem and says it is working. The modem is external ambient.

There obviously isnt a hardware fault as the modem works in 98.any ideas welcome.

regards

As you said, you have dual boot system, 98 and XP, and the modem work fine in 98, but do not work with XP, and when you check the modem property in XP it is recognized, but still does not work I propose you to localize the name and model of your modem, then go to site below and download the necessary driver for the modem to work in XP

http://www.download.com

Here you must select Driver, which is located below Utilities & Drivers Remember to put the name of your modem in the field that is located on top of the page.
