How do I transfer files from my Windows 98 computer to my Windows XP computer by way of a Linksys Cable/DSL Router with 4 port switch

There are several ways to connect two computers to share files with a router one way is to share your drives or folders and setup your machines to connect to the shares, another way to access the drives on machines in your network is to be logged in with the administrators account, then you can use the admin default shares Meaning, computer's A & B are on B is logged in, you will log into A as administrator acount and to access the C drive on the B machine you would go to START, select RUN, type \\machinename\c$ - (two slashes foolowed by the name of the machine you wish to connect to,another slash followed the drive letter and the dollar symbol) most likely you will be prompted to enter a login for the machine you are attempting to connect to Hope this helps you.
