How to Open a File in my CD-ROM with the[program that i want to open it?

I have some files on my C drive that when opened are usually opened in Wordpad, and are just a lot of gibberish.

Many lines of little squares, or diamonds, or other symbols that cannot be read.

What are these, and are they necessary on my drive?

Thank you,

Carl W. Veenstra
