Why doesn't OE (outlook express) let me open attachments?

I had to recently totally erase my hard drive and reload all programs on my computer after a crash with assistance from a Dell rep. Since then (don't know if it's related) the attachments I receive with my e-mails will not open (from trusted friends). There is a message that says OE will not open the attachments as there is a safety problem. Help - what do I do?

OE6 has a security feature under Tools | Options | Security labeled "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus You CAN turn this off, by opening OE6 tools tab, options, security , and removing the check from the "Do not allow attachments to be saved" option this feature will be enabled by defualt if you relload OE6.
