Operating system not found

My Compaq Presario 4122 desktop (UK) gave me the message 'operating system not found'. As my computer was not under warranty anymore, and I did not have the Quickresotre CD to return to the original configurations, I replaced the hard disk with a non-compaq one, and reinstalled windows 95. Now I can just sometimes get into Windows, and use MS Office. but nothing else works.Compaq told me they don't have Quickrestore for my model. I wonder even if they did, would it work with the new hard disk? Is there anyway of saving my computer?

Check the manufacturer online and see if you can download the operating system or if you can buy it directly from the company.
