My son tried to load windows xp on to his dell latitude laptop but only got half way through because it couldn't find the external cd rom drive so he cancelled the setup and continued using windows 98, however when booting up the laptop the next day it first goes to a dos menu asking you to select the operating system to start 1) windows xp set up or 2) cancel windows xp set up when I select 1 it goes to the point where my son got to not finding the cd rom and when I press 2 it tries to load windows 98 but it goes Msgsrv32 This program has preformed an a illegall operation and will shut down which it does, Ive tried using the f8 key for the other options eg: safe mode but it still goes through the above process, please help as my son has all his schoolwork on it

Thanx

Tracy

The failed install of XP might have changed the System ini files so you might have to reformat the Hard Disk, and install Win '98 (especially since you can't boot to safe mode).
