My friends Gateway computer will not boot up.

The windows 98 logo will come on, and then an error message will come on the screen saying

"Data Error reading drive C" Abort, Fail, Retry

When you press "A" to Abort it will go to the C:\> prompt.

You can type in "Dir" and it shows all the directories.

When I type "CD Windows I get the C:\Windows directory and then when I type Dir nothing happens and then the Error message appears.

Could he of gotten a virus that distroyed the "Windows"directory?

Do you think the hard drive is failing?

Well, you say whe you type a DIR in the Windows directory and nothing happens What did the error message say?. This maybe a virus that had access to the computer and someone open that virus program and delete everything on the system directory this case Windows folder

I don't think that a hard drive is failing because if it does then you wouldn't be able to get access to the c: drive at all

What you might do, is to backup you important files and reinstall windows 98 , and this time try to install the antivirus and update it very week
