Why does my computer still shut down even after virus removals, reinstalls, power supply replacements?

I have a pent 3 733mghz CPU on a MSI 6309- lite m/board, running 512 pc133 sdram. suddenly several weeks ago the computer began shutting down for no reason whilst in use, it would do it under load as well as at idle. It also became difficult to boot, often taking up to 10 attempts to boot, it would get to the boot up screen then just shut down and restart. When it restarted it would come up with a microsoft error message" that the computer had shut down to protect my files due to an interuption to the power supply or the reset button was pushed " it would then ask me whether to start up in normal mode or in the last known good configuration. I took it to a local computer shop who immediately discovered three " java" virus's on the computer despite having Nortons with up to date definitions.

The virus's were removed and the system seemed ok for a few days, but then started again.

I have done a complete format and re install which seemed to work for about a week.

the problem has re occured.

I have installed a new power supply as the old one had a noisy fan and combined with the error message I considered this was a possibility. The problem still exsits.

I am wondering whether its a motherboard fault ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

This question was answered on April 6, 2004. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

The hard drive may still be damaged or corrupted from the (3) viruses that were found, and even though you did a clean install, we are talking about sectors being corrupted in the hard drive You sure solution to the problem is to replace the hard drive and reconfigure the machine.

And, if you really want to make sure the problem is solved, you should replace the motherboard as well because the circuitry in the board could have been corrupted.
