Why won't my computer go into standby mode?

My computer, in trying to go to standby mode, is stuck with the screen saying preparing to go to standby. To get out of this mode I have to re-boot the computer. Any suggestions. Thanks

There are many different reasons why a computer won't go into standby mode:

When Windows Media Player media is paused, your computer may not be able to enter Standby mode

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP Home Edition & Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP Professional

After you set the Power Options profile so that your computer enters standby after 45 or more minutes, your computer may not enter standby after 45 or more minutes

So check you Power options profile

On a computer that is equipped with an IBM ScrollPoint mouse, you may not be able to put the computer into Standby mode.

On a computer that has an ATI 3D RAGE PRO Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) 2X device installed, when you click Standby on the Start menu to try to put the computer into Standby mode, you may receive the following error message:

The device driver for the ATI 3D RAGE Pro AGP 2X device is preventing the machine from entering standby, please close all applications and try again If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver

This behavior may also occur on computers that have an ATI 3D RAGE XL AGP 2X device installed

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because Windows XP does not provide full power management support for the device driver
