In Device Manager, there are two hard disk controllers. I accidentally deleted one of them. Now my laptop will not boot up to windows 98. I have to use a boot disk. When I tried to format my hard drive using fdisk, I am getting a message that states "no fixed disks present". I did not have a problem with my laptop until I deleted one of the IDE hard disk controllers. Can anyone help me? (Please know that I am a novice, so please be very detailed)

Go to programs/accessories/system tools/system restore Click on system restore and set the date of your last good boot up That is the day before you deleted that file Your system will restore itself to you last good boot up by the date you put in Run it.
