Why doesn't my computer boot up

my computer will not boot. Instead it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left. I cannot get into safe mode or anything else. I've tried booting to the xp disc and repairing but that hasn't fixed my problem. any ideas of how to fix the problem to get my computer to boot??

First put the Windows XP restoration disc in CD-ROM drive Restart your computer It will ask to boot from disc or reinstall click reinstall XP I hope I was helpful.
