How do I eliminate unwanted running applications? When I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del the computer list a lot of different applications that are running and I only want those that are necessary to run my windows 98 so I can do system maintenance without the computer restarting.. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok you can try this:
You can perform Clean Boot to make sure there are only basic processes running and nothing else.
1 Click "Start" -> "Run" and type "msconfig", press Enter;
2 Under "General" tab choose "Selective startup" and unselect all the checkboxes;
3 Reboot and check if that is what you wanted.
Also, if you are not able to access internet after performing Clean Boot, go to Start > Run and under General select Normal Startup.
