What is Defrag

My PC is 3 years old and I've never run the defrag until about a week ago. I had a friend over to try to get Norton Antivius 2004 Professional started. Hhe started my defrag and it ran overnight with no change in the details, and 0% completed showing about 20 hours later. So I quit and have tried it again three times since, with the same result. Any ideas why it shows 0% complete after such a long time?
