I upgraded this Win 98 2nd ed. PC to XP and when it reformatted the drive and installed upgrade it will no longer see my CD-Rom and CD-RW drives. It has one of each, not a dual drive. I bought a new one as the manufacturere (Sony) of the CD drive said it was not compatable with XP. Now that I put it in, it still doesn't recognize it. I didn't change the settings (switches)- It was set up with a master / slave set up. I installed the new CDRom to be the master and left a second one to be slave and left the hardware switches as they were. What did i do wrong (or what didn't I do wrong)

I think you should change all the jumper setting on both cd roms to cable select I think its always easier to use cable select Once you do that reboot and install the drivers Xp should do this automattacally but if not you can always do it manually with the cd that came with the new drive I would also check on Microsoft's site to make sure that the drives are compatible with XP and check with the manufacture's site for XP drivers.
