Why do I get from time to time a message that states that your system has performed a ilegal operation and will be shut down?

Why do I get from time to time a message that states that your system has performed a ilegal operation and will be shut down? It also says if the problem persists to contact your program vendor? At this point the computer freezes up and I have to shut it down and reboot.
