Laptop won't boot?

my laptop will not boot up. it shows the compaq screen and the windows XP screen, but it will not go past there. i've tried everything i can, what can i do?

If you hear strange clicking noises it may be a sign that your HDD is dead or or dying You may also wish to attempt to boot from the cd rom drive and preform a clean install of your preferred OS Enter the bios and change the boot order so that upon powering on your pc will read straight from the disk and run the installer
