What is software compatibility?

Over the past couple of weeks I have been trying to download various plug-ins and drivers off of the internet, but am unable to do it. Whenever I click on a link to download something, the same thing always comes up. It reads:

C:/DOCUME~1/ADAM//LOCALS~1/TEMP/"name of file being downloaded".exe

Then it says:

"Could not be saved, because the source file could not be read"

"Try again later, or contact the server administrator"

I've tried downloading so many different plug-ins from different sites, so I know that the problem does not have to do with the server. Anyone Please Help! I really need to get past this problem. Please e-mail me if you know any solutions, or have any suggestions on where I can go to receive help.
