I recently installed Windows XP on my system that was previously running Windows 98.
I was having problems with the new OS and programs opening extremely slow. It was taking a very long time to boot up. I thought I was having hard drive problems so I replaced the hard drive ( was 10gb, now 20 gb). I re-loaded Windows XP and am still having the same problem. It seems to get progressively worse. Please help!!!

First, Check task manager and the event logs to see if a specific process is hanging Or you can go through the list of running processes and kill the thread manually before shutting down If your computer shuts down immediately after you’ve deleted a process, you found your culprit If not, apply the same method to the other process until you find the culprit
