My 3 year old VAIO FX140 laptop will not run the ME operating system. When the power is turned on, a text message says a registry/configuration problem was detected and to run "scanreg." Then, a blank safe mode screen appears. After that, nothing happens. The safe mode screen appears "frozen." I have tried all the function keys, hitting "enter" and "esc" but the safe mode screen just stays there and does nothing. By doing cntrl, alt, del I am able to get a window that allows me to shut down. How do I get beyond this stalled safe mode screen in order to do the necessary system checks?

Your problem has to be with a virus that has infected your system so there are two things that you could do.

1) take the hard drive of the infected computer and conect it as a slave in a working sytem that has an up to date antivirus program, the scan the hard drive with the antivirus and then run scanreg in that drive.

2) if you get no result with the first option then your next choice is to reinstall your OS
