While trying to upgrade my children's computer from Me, I first upgraded to windows 2000 then when there were some issues I upgraded to XP. again this was unsatisfactory. How can I get back to ME with a minimal amount of discomfort, ie. reformating the hard drive and reinstalling everything?

Yes, reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows Me is the best way You can also install more than one operating system on your computer and choose which operating system you want to use every time you start your computer This is often called a dual-boot or multiple-boot configuration During Startup a menu will be available wherein you could choose the operating system that you desire For more information visit www.microsoft.com.
